Route 895 Connector / Pocahontas Parkway

The Route 895 over I-95 and the James River Project in Richmond, Virginia is part of the 8.8-mi. Route 895 Connector Project that connects I-95 and I-295. The $381 million high-level inter-change was constructed under a design-build contract. The segmental bridges consist of the east and west approaches, the river crossing over the James River and three ramp structures. The approaches are pre-cast and built in balanced-cantilever. The west approach was constructed with a self-launching over-head gantry. The ramps are precast concrete segmental box girders and built span-by-span using a self-launching underslung erection truss. The river crossing has a 205 meter main span that was constructed cast-in-place in balanced cantilever using form travelers. The main span segments vary in depth from 12 to 4 meters and in width from 19 to 23.5 meters. Construction of the nearly 200 cast-in-place two cell segments ranging in length from 3.96 to 4.88 meters was accomplished through simultaneous use of three pairs of form travelers. The first river crossing typical segment was cast in November of 2000. While most of the main piers consist of stiff twin-column arrangements, a single-column pier on the westbound bridge was stabilized during construction using a unique cable-stayed arrangement.

The Joint Venture of Condotte America, Inc. and McLean Contracting provided all labor, supervision, materials and equipment and all incidentals necessary to perform all the bridge work for the prime contractor, Fluor Daniel-Morrion Knudsen, LLC.
