The Sidney Lanier Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge that spans the Brunswick River in Brunswick, GA. This bridge project, built for the Georgia Department of Transportation, incorporated 1.6 miles of construction consisting of the main span of the Sidney Lanier Bridge, the remaining portions of the south and north approach bridge, a bridge inspection traveler & protective islands on SR 25/US 82/US 17 over the Brunswick River in Brunswick. This high level bridge (185 Ft over water) is a cable stayed bridge with a main span of 1,250 Ft carrying four (4) lanes of traffic over a very busy navigable waterway that is the main entrance to the Port of Brunswick in the State of Georgia.
The width of the bridge is 71 feet between curbs. The navigation channel has a minimum horizontal clearance of 400 feet and a vertical clearance of 185 feet. The minimum clearance between pier protection islands is 1,040 feet. Supported by 176 stay cables, the main span is anchored into twin pylons rising 480 feet above the surface of the river. The Sidney Lanier Bridge is the tallest and longest bridge in GA and the seventy-sixth longest cable stayed bridge in the world.
Innovative techniques were used to construct the pier islands, towers, support trussess and bridge deck. Additional complexities included seismic, aerodynamic, and enivronmental considerations. The Sidney Lanier bridge provides an elegant cable-stayed crossing of the Brunswick River, and also interacts well with the wildlife in its environment. The project was constructed by a Joint Venture of Recchi America (now Condotte America) and GLF in which Condotte was the lead partner.
