Project Goal
This project is motivated by a commitment to help preserve and improve the natural wetland environment. The project occurs in one of the most sensitive wetland habitats in Florida serving as the northern border of Everglades National Park. The park is home to an impressive variety of threatened and endangered species.The overall purpose of this project is Everglades restoration. Specifically, the Congressionally-authorized purpose is to restore more natural flow to Everglades National Park and Florida Bay, Everglades National Park and Florida Bay, restoring habitat within the park and ecological connectivity between the park and the water conservation areas. This project is calculated to restore 80% of the natural water flow into the Everglades. The Phase 2 Total Project Length Roadway and Bridge is 3.3 Miles consisting of a 2-lane roadway.
Bridge Information
The total bridge length is 2.3 miles. The western bridge approach of bridge 1 is located east of the Osceola Camp and the eastern bridge approach of bridge 2 is located west of the Airboat Association/Frog City. The bridges will create conveyance openings by removing sections of the existing highway corresponding to the locations of the new bridge spans. The bridges were constructed on a centerline approximately 50 feet south of the centerline of the existing roadway in order to maintain motor vehicle traffic during bridge construction. The project also includes the construction of the approaching roadways, drainage and retention systems, utility coordination and canal excavation.
