This design/build/finance project for the Florida Department of Transportation District 6 was part of the Palmetto Expressway Improvement Program executed to alleviate traffic congestion along these 2 critical highways in South Florida. The work consisted of the addition of one general use lane in each direction; auxiliary lanes between all interchanges; interchange improvements and, operational and safety improvements along the SR826 mainline and ramps. The three interchange improvements were: 1) the SR826 interchanges at SW 56 Street/Miller Drive, 2) SR874/Don Shula Expressway and 3) SW 40 Street/Bird Road. Four of the bridges were over the CSX railroad and are comprised of steel girders. The other interchange bridges were designed with concrete beams (AASHTO Type IV, Mod. Bulb Tee, Florida I Beams). This project also included a new pedestrian bridge, new drainage, lighting, landscaping improvements, ITS and signalization improvements. The team provided an alternative design that allowed for better traffic mobility while saving the client $53 million when compared to the next lowest bidder. The project was completed 171 days ahead of schedule and achieved an early completion bonus. The project was recognized in 2013 with the DBIA “Florida Project of the Year”, ASCE Miami Chapter - "Project of the Year" and the FTBA “Statewide Best in Construction for Bridge Work” awards. The project was contracted to the joint venture of Condotte de Moya JV for which Condotte America, Inc. was a 50% partner.
